Frequency protection: soft cap and hard ceiling

Last verified

Deloosh counts how many campaign emails each person has received from you in the last 30 days, and it protects them at two levels: a soft cap that coaches you (around 4 by default) and a hard ceiling that blocks the send (around 8 by default). The hard ceiling denies with frequency_hard_ceiling.

The two levels

The soft cap is not a block. Cross it and the send still goes out. The send plan shows the configured Soft cap as a per-recipient coaching threshold. Its separate 30d sends figure is the workspace-wide total of marketing sends, so do not compare that tenant-wide number with the per-recipient cap.

The hard ceiling is a block. A recipient at or over the ceiling is denied, with a reason naming the count and the configured ceiling: “{recipient} at the hard ceiling: {n} cap-governed sends in 30d for tenant {your workspace} (ceiling {hard})”. The rest of the audience is unaffected — one person hitting their ceiling does not stop the send to everyone else.

The frequency check is per recipient over a rolling 30 days, and it counts campaign sends — marketing and cold outreach. It is not the tenant-wide 30d sends field and not a monthly volume budget for your workspace; that separate limit is covered in SEND-8, Monthly send caps.

About those numbers

Around 4 and around 8 are the shipped defaults, not a contract. They are configurable per workspace, so read them as Deloosh’s default judgment about email fatigue rather than a promised constant. The send plan shows the values actually in force for you.

Why fatigue is a deliverability problem, not just a courtesy one

Higher per-recipient frequency can increase fatigue, unsubscribe, and complaint risk. The soft cap makes that risk visible; the hard ceiling prevents campaign sends once the configured recipient-level limit is reached.

Review a recipient near the ceiling before adding another campaign send. If a whole cohort has dense recent histories and little recorded activity, consider the dormant-subscribers signal — see SIG-7, The dormant-subscribers (sunset) signal.

What to do when someone hits the ceiling

Wait for their 30-day window to roll forward, or narrow your audience so they are not in it. If you genuinely need a higher ceiling for your business, it is a per-workspace setting — ask in chat.

The pacing projection is separate: it advises whether to split a send or move its deadline, but does not yet spread the send automatically. See SEND-12, Safe-send-by, pacing, and “split or move the deadline”.
